The Atomberg Intellon is a smart alkaline water purifier with RO+UF+UV+Alkaline technology and an Intelligent Filtration System that automatically analyzes source water. It has advanced IoT features with app connectivity, which gives the purifier a tech-forward feel, and is the best alkaline purifier we’ve tested to date (comparing 20+ purifiers tested).

This purifier has moderate storage capacity, which is great if you have regular water usage patterns. Flow rate levels are excellent (25L/hr), which is just slightly more than the average.

Aside from the performance, one of the biggest advantages of the Intellon is that it comes with TasteTune technology. It has three TDS adjustment ranges (50-100ppm, 75-125ppm, 100-150ppm). This provides a wide variety of mineralization options and makes it easier to suit the preferences of a wider range of users.

In our performance scores, the Intellon scores a 9.86, ranking in the top 1% of all purifiers tested to date. This score also earns it the title of #1 best alkaline water purifier.

This purifier has high storage capacity and excellent levels of water recovery (55%). This is pretty typical for premium purifiers, as they tend to have more advanced recovery systems.

The Z9 is available with hot water dispensing, offering warm (45°C) and hot (80°C) options with child lock protection.

When we tested this purifier, the Z9 earned an overall score of 9.46, ranking in the top 1% of all hot water purifiers, and the top 3% of all purifiers tested (over 20+ compared).

Should You Buy An Alkaline Water Purifier?

I would recommend an alkaline water purifier for users who are looking for the following:

1. Higher Overall Performance

Alkaline purifiers have an overall performance score of 8.86 compared to the average performance score of 8.57. Looking at our top 20 best purifiers tested to date, only three of those purifiers are non-alkaline.

Alkaline purifiers dominate the list of top performers and represent the best of the best in the modern water purifier market.

2. Better Health Benefits

Alkaline purifiers have an average pH enhancement score of 9.2, just beating the overall average score of 8.5. Great alkalinity in purifiers is largely a product of specialized alkaline filters and mineral cartridges.

Smart alkaline purifiers in particular earned notably better than average scores with a 9.5. That said, RO alkaline purifiers were slightly below at 9.2.

Looking at all purifiers tested that earned a 10/10 alkalinity score, only 12% of those didn’t have alkaline enhancement technology.

3. Better Mineral Retention

The same filters that improve alkalinity also enhance mineral content. Alkaline purifiers have an average mineral retention score of 9.3, 12% better than the average purifier.

When we combine great alkalinity with great mineral retention, we get great health benefits.

Within the list of purifiers that earned a mineral retention score of 9.9 or 10, 100% of those purifiers are some type of alkaline purifier. (smart alkaline, copper alkaline, mineral alkaline, etc.)

4. Better Water Recovery

The combination of advanced recovery technologies, intelligent systems, and optimized purification provides exceptional water recovery in many cases.

As water flows through an alkaline purifier, advanced recovery systems minimize waste while the alkaline filters enhance the purified water.

Looking exclusively at purifiers that earned a 10/10 water recovery score, only 18% of those purifiers are non-alkaline. This probably also has something to do with smart alkaline purifiers having advanced recovery technology.

5. Slightly Higher Storage

Alkaline purifiers have 0.7L more storage than average. This is a slight difference but could be worth noting if you are particular about this issue.

That being said, there are always alkaline purifiers that break the mold with either minimal storage or very high storage.

6. Slightly Better Flow Rate

Alkaline purifiers have 3L/hr better flow rate than average of 15L/hr, based on all of our tests to date. Furthermore, smart alkaline purifiers are significantly better than average, being 7L/hr over the average.

Who Should Not Buy An Alkaline Water Purifier?

I would not recommend an alkaline purifier for users who are deeply concerned with the following issues:

1. Higher Average Price

While alkaline purifiers are cheaper than some purifier types, they are also more expensive than many other types. Alkaline purifiers have a higher average price than basic UV, UF, or standard RO purifiers.

If you don’t need the pH enhancement or health benefits, opting for a standard purifier can save you some cash compared to an alkaline purifier. Here is a quick list of standard purifiers under ₹10,000.

2. Slightly Higher Maintenance

Alkaline purifiers have additional filters and cartridges that need regular replacement compared to standard purifiers (alkaline filter, mineral cartridge, copper cartridge). UV alkaline purifiers in particular require UV lamp replacement annually.

That being said, like the other factors, there are some outstanding alkaline purifiers that break the mold and maintain lower maintenance costs—ie: the Atomberg Intellon with 2-year all-inclusive warranty, or KENT Maxx with AMC under ₹3,000. More broadly speaking, smart alkaline purifiers have better filter life management.

3. Slightly Higher Power Consumption

The average power consumption for an alkaline purifier is 48W compared to the average across all purifiers tested (45W). As you can see, this difference is minimal, but alkaline purifiers are technically more power-hungry than average.

For alkaline purifiers with excellent power efficiency, opt for the KENT Maxx or Aquaguard Astor, or go with a UV alkaline purifier, which on average has below average power consumption and the operation isn’t as power-intensive as RO systems.

4. You Don’t Believe in Alkaline Water Benefits

An alkaline water purifier just is not going to provide value if you’re skeptical about alkaline water’s health claims. This is neither a good nor bad thing, but an alkaline purifier may be disappointing if you’re not specifically looking for pH enhancement.

Do you only need safe drinking water without pH modification? Do you want simple purification without additional features? If you’re specifically looking for basic purification, an alkaline purifier might not be the right choice for you.
